I expected to enjoy Visby.

I didn’t expect to fall in love with it.

Located on Sweden’s island of Gotland, this UNESCO World Heritage Site feels like a perfectly preserved medieval fairytale. Stone walls surround winding cobblestone streets lined with roses, cafés, artisan boutiques, and centuries of history.

During our visit, we explored the town with a local historian and visited the Gotland Museum, home to an impressive collection of Viking artifacts and regional treasures.

But the real joy came from simply wandering.

Some of my favorite travel memories aren’t tied to famous landmarks. They’re tied to moments: a leisurely lunch in the town square, discovering a local artisan shop, or turning a corner to find another impossibly charming street.

Visby delivered those moments in abundance.

Having Kalmar Castle Almost to Ourselves

If I had to choose the biggest surprise of the trip, it would be Kalmar.

Our visit to Kalmar Castle included early access before public opening hours. Without crowds, the experience felt remarkably personal and immersive.

As I explored the castle’s halls and courtyards, I couldn’t help but think about the centuries of Scandinavian history that had unfolded within its walls.

Then came an unexpected twist.

The castle was hosting a contemporary AI exhibition that I almost skipped. Thankfully, curiosity won. It ended up becoming one of the most fascinating experiences of the entire journey and a reminder that some of the best travel moments are the ones we never planned for.

Later that day, we visited the Kalmar County Museum, where artifacts recovered from the legendary warship Kronan are displayed. Seeing thousands of recovered silver coins and maritime treasures felt like stepping into a real-life treasure hunt.

An Unexpected Discovery on Bornholm: Baltic Sea Glass

Bornholm was a port I hadn’t anticipated stealing my heart — but then, the best travel experiences rarely announce themselves.

Tucked along the rocky southern coast near Gudhjem, Baltic Sea Glass is an artisan glass studio and gallery where you can watch master glassblowers shape molten glass into extraordinary works of art right before your eyes. The glow of the furnace, the fluid movement of the glass as it’s shaped, the quiet concentration of the artists — it’s mesmerizing to witness craft at this level.

The gallery itself is every bit as beautiful as the process. Collections range from everyday glassware to one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces, each one handmade and utterly unique. Needless to say, I didn’t leave empty-handed. There was one piece that simply had to come home with me — and every time I look at it, I’m back on the island.

It’s the kind of find that reminds me why slow, exploratory travel matters. You can’t stumble into a moment like that on a rushed itinerary.
