Visiting All 50 States: What America Taught Me

Visiting All 50 States Changed How I See Travel

Visiting all 50 states was never part of some grand master plan. What began as work trips, spontaneous weekends away, and cross-country drives slowly became one of the most meaningful travel experiences of my life. Somewhere around my twentieth state, I realized traveling across America was becoming more than a goal—it was becoming part of who I am.

Looking back now, traveling across all 50 states feels like a reflection of my natural curiosity and constant desire to explore. Sometimes I joke that maybe in another life—or through my ancestors—I must have been an explorer, because I’ve always felt drawn to discovering what exists beyond what I already know.

And what I discovered while exploring the United States was far more than destinations.

I discovered how deeply food connects us to place. To this day, one of the first things I tell people visiting Southern California is to eat the fish tacos. Not at the trendiest restaurant, but somewhere local. Somewhere casual. Somewhere that has perfected them over time. Maybe it’s the freshness, the simplicity, or the influence of the coast itself, but they taste different there. That became one of my earliest lessons in meaningful travel experiences: the smallest moments often tell you the most about where you are.

Then there were the landscapes that permanently stayed with me.

Approaching Devils Tower National Monument for the first time felt surreal. I had seen images of it growing up, but nothing prepares you for seeing it rise against an endless Wyoming sky with your own eyes. The scale of the American West suddenly felt real to me in a way it never had before.

The same thing happened while riding through the Black Hills on the back of a motorcycle between Sturgis and Wyoming. The winding roads, the pine-covered hills, the silence between stretches of highway—it felt cinematic in the best possible way. Some places don’t just impress you; they stay with you.

The Road Trips and Landscapes I’ll Never Forget

One of my favorite memories was driving part of U.S. Route 66 from Missouri to California with my best friend while she relocated across the country. We had absolutely no plan, which somehow made the experience even better. We stopped at roadside attractions frozen in time, wandered through old motels filled with Hollywood nostalgia, explored Meteor Crater, and somehow convinced ourselves it was perfectly reasonable to run three miles through Petrified Forest National Park in the middle of a cross-country road trip.

And then there was the moment we forgot to fill the gas tank while driving through the desert with no cell service.

No GPS. No distractions. Just silence, desert roads, and the shared understanding that we really needed the next gas station to appear soon.

Oddly enough, those imperfect moments are the ones I remember most.

One of the most fascinating parts of traveling across all 50 states was realizing just how different each part of America truly feels. The accents change, the food changes, the pace of life changes, and even the way people speak about their history changes. Some places are shaped by agriculture, others by industry, sports, immigration, or generations of tradition. Every region carries its own personality and pride, which is what makes traveling across the United States so interesting. You quickly realize there is no singular American experience—there are countless versions of it woven together.

What Traveling Across America Taught Me About People

Travel also taught me the importance of staying open-minded. You cannot approach every destination assuming it will feel the same or reflect your own experiences. Part of meaningful travel is allowing a place to reveal itself to you before deciding how you feel about it.

I remember walking through Augusta and commenting on the beauty of the historic Civil War-era homes when someone quickly corrected me with, “You mean the War of Northern Aggression?” He was completely serious. It caught me off guard and reminded me how deeply history and regional identity still shape perspectives throughout the country. Moments like that stayed with me—not because they were uncomfortable, but because they reminded me how important it is to listen, learn, and understand places beyond surface impressions.

How Visiting All 50 States Shaped My Work as a Travel Advisor

Visiting all 50 states ultimately shaped how I approach my work as a luxury travel advisor today.

It taught me that the most meaningful travel experiences rarely come from simply checking into a beautiful hotel, although I will never say no to an exceptional property. The moments people remember most often happen in between: conversations with locals, scenic detours, family-owned restaurants, hidden viewpoints, or recommendations from someone who genuinely loves where they live.

That philosophy shapes every itinerary I create.

I want my clients to experience destinations, not just visit them. To feel connected to a place through its culture, food, landscapes, history, and people. Luxury travel, to me, is not just about access—it is about depth, emotion, curiosity, and discovery.

That sense of curiosity is something I now encourage in every client experience I design. I hope my clients leave a trip with more than beautiful photos or a hotel recommendation. I hope something within them opens up. The best travel experiences challenge us to become more curious, more appreciative, and more connected to the world around us.

America at 250: Curiosity, Diversity, and Exploration

And now, after visiting all 50 states, I can officially say I’m part of the club.

(Yoga on glacier in Alaska?? Yes, please)

My final state was Idaho, and reaching it felt emotional in a way I didn’t fully expect. Not because the journey was ending, but because I realized how much those years of exploration had shaped me personally and professionally.

As America approaches its 250th birthday, I find myself appreciating this country in a deeper and more nuanced way after exploring every state. It has been a complicated, evolving, and transformative 250 years. Yet one thing remains clear: the diversity of people, cultures, traditions, and perspectives woven throughout this country is what gives it its character.

This country gave me unforgettable landscapes, incredible food, meaningful conversations, uncomfortable lessons, moments of freedom, and stories I will carry for the rest of my life.

This is my love letter to a country I wasn’t born in, but one I chose to explore fully.

I love the history of the Northeast, the warmth and flavor of the South, the dramatic beauty of the American West, the charm of small towns, and the quiet magic hidden in places many travelers overlook. I love that every region feels entirely different, yet somehow connected by a shared sense of identity.

If traveling across the United States taught me anything, it’s that openness matters. Kindness matters. Curiosity matters. We are often far more connected than we realize, even when our backgrounds, traditions, or ways of life look different.

So whether it’s a road trip through the American West, a food-focused getaway through the South, or finally visiting that national park you’ve always talked about seeing, my hope is simple: explore more. Stay curious. Give places—and people—the opportunity to surprise you. There is so much beauty, culture, history, and adventure waiting to be discovered across the country. Visit The USA is a wonderful resource for anyone looking to start planning their next American adventure.”

The most meaningful journeys are often the ones that challenge us, open our perspective, and leave us with stories we carry long after we return home. Helping others discover those kinds of experiences has become one of the most rewarding parts of my work as a travel advisor.

Visiting all 50 states reminded me that meaningful travel is not about checking destinations off a list, but about remaining curious enough to let a place change you.

After all 50 states, I can honestly say this journey left me feeling grateful, inspired, and even more excited to keep exploring what’s next.
